COURTNEY BARNETT MTV Unplugged (Live in Melbourne)

Intime Momente und emotionale Tiefe von COURTNEY BARNETT auf MTV UNPLUGGED (LIVE IN MELBOURNE) mit bewegenden Covern und einem neuen, unveröffentlichten Song.

Courtney Barnett hat ein neues MTV Unplugged Live Album veröffentlicht. Die Aufführung wurde im Oktober 2019 in Barnett’s Heimatstadt Melbourne, Australien, aufgenommen. Barnett’s Auswahl umfasst unter anderem “Sunday Roast”, “Avant Gardener” und ein Cover von Leonard Cohen’s “So Long, Marianne”. Die Sammlung enthält auch einen zuvor unveröffentlichten Song von Barnett mit dem Titel “Play It On Repeat“. Neben den Bandkollegen Dave Mudie und Bones Sloane spielt auch die Cellistin Lucy Waldron ihre intime, reduzierte Performance. Gäste sind Paul Kelly, Marlon Williams und Evelyn Ida Morris. 

Für ihr neues Lied tritt Barnett solo mit der Akustikgitarre auf. Über eine melancholische Melodie singt sie mit wehmütiger Stimme: “Every day I wake/Hope it’s a mistake/Wish I could go back to dreaming/Everything I make/trying not to break/Going round and round in circles. Tell me, would you even know?/Would you even care if you never see me again?” Der Höhepunkt des Sets ist jedoch Barnett’s Cover von Leonard Cohen’s Klassiker „So Long, Marianne“, der Cohen’s Muse Marianne Ihlen gewidmet ist, die 2016 verstarb. Er selbst ist drei Monate später verstorben und man spürt das Gewicht des Songs in Barnett’s Stimme. Manchmal bricht Ihre Stimme, wenn die Klänge hoch und tief schlagen, aber es dient nur dazu, dass es sich noch realer anfühlt.

Barnett erzählt selbst folgendes über das Album: “I love playing to Melbourne crowds…I wanted to have a mixture of old songs, new songs and covers, and tracks that we don’t perform all the time – it’s been interesting to see the songs through a different filter, and it brings out this other emotional side to the music and the lyrics…. Unplugged is so nostalgic for me. We had two Unplugged Records in our CD collection growing up and I know those records inside out because we listened to them every day.”
