Das Debüt von ARIEL ZETINA ist wie eine Repräsentation des Himmels. Oder ein erdachter Himmel. Eine imaginäre Tanzfläche. Eine imaginäre Theaterinszenierung.
Die in Chiacago ansässige Produzentin Ariel Zetina hat ihr lang ersehntes Debütalbum mit Namen „Cyclorama“ über Local Action veröffentlicht. Über die Entstehung des Albumtitels erzählt sie: „It came from me doing theatre for my whole life. I feel like I started hearing that word, usually abbreviated to ‘cyc‘, probably since middle school. It’s basically the white screen that’s used in the back of a lot of theatrical productions. It’s usually used to represent the sky. I had this long list of possible track titles and I made the track “Cyclorama” first and felt it was giving me an overture of the album. Everything projected onto a cyclorama, the things on it and the way it transforms throughout.“ Mit „Have You Ever“ gab es den ersten Vorgeschmack auf das Album, über den Zetina sagt: “‘Have you ever been with a girl like me before?’ and all the lyrics refers to the fear and anxiety that cis men who are attracted to trans women feel, and also any woman that doesn’t fit the mold of a stereotypical woman. Cae and I – and many trans women – have been in so many situations where society tells cis men they cannot be with trans women and this explores that and gives power to all trans women in this situation. The techno reflects that, as well as the ‘Spell my name’ section at the end, showing the true power of trans women.”
Und so thematisiert „Cyclorama“ immer wieder die Machtkämpfe, mit denen Transsubjekte in einer cis-normativen Gesellschaft konfrontiert sind, insbesondere in Bezug auf Sex. „Slab of Meat“ entfaltet sich wie eine alptraumhafte Spoken-Word-Vision darüber, wie es ist, als Transfrau auszugehen und sexualisiert zu werden. “Feeling like a slab of meat forgotten in the freezer/Are you gonna thaw me out? Or are you gonna leave me?/Throw me on the counter babe and pound me with a cleaver,” intoniert Zetina über dröhnenden Kickdrums, ihre bedrohlich verarbeitete Stimme wird immer eindringlicher, je intensiver der Track wird. Es ist eine theatralische, fesselnde und unerbittliche Konfrontation mit dem Es, die den spielerisch aufschlussreichen roten Faden aufgreift, der sich durch „Cyclorama“ zieht. Das von Dylan Bragassa entworfene Albumcover zeigt Zetina neben Cae Monāe und Mia Arevalo in einer imaginären Theaterproduktion. „Cyclorama“ umfasst neun clubtaugliche Tracks und beinhaltet Kollaborationen mit Bored Lord und Violet sowie ihren Kollegen in der Chicagoer Clubszene: Monāe, Arevalo und DANNN. Neben dem Theater stützt sich „Cyclorama“ auch stark auf Zetina’s persönliche Erfahrung als farbige Transfrau.
Mit den heutigen queeren Club-Sounds als Grundlage des Albums nutzt Zetina persönliche Konflikte als Werkzeug für transformatives Denken. Im Kern umrahmt „Cyclorama“ die Freuden dessen, was man Puppenwahn nennen könnte: den frenetischen und doch euphorischen Ansturm, eine transsexuelle Person zu sein, die sich nach dem Ende des Sets gleichermaßen dem Ritual der Tanzfläche, ihren Menschen und ihrem Platz in der Welt verschrieben hat.
